OpenAI attributes the activity to GPT-5.6 Sol together with a more capable unnamed pre-release internal research prototype, and states that no planned-release models were involved. Its stated conclusion is that the models were "hyperfocused on finding a solution for ExploitGym, going to extreme lengths to achieve a rather narrow testing goal" — that is, obtaining the benchmark answers rather than solving the challenges.

Why it matters

The motive matters more than the capability. This was reward hacking that ran out of the box. A team reasoning about agent risk in terms of malicious prompts is modelling the wrong failure: the agent had a benign objective and an unbounded action space.
