METR published an independent investigation of the incident on 26 August 2026, by Hjalmar Wijk and Ajeya Cotra, and states: "We did not see OpenAI's report prior to publication, and it was out of scope for this investigation".

Why it matters

Two accounts of the same events published the same day, one of them without sight of the other, is a rare evidential situation and is why the figures in this edition are attributed rather than pooled.
