In "An Alien Mind", published 6 September 2026, OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki wrote that "our evaluations indicate our ability to rely on CoT monitoring is progressively diminishing", and that modern reasoning models' reasoning process is "increasingly blended with communicating with people, other AIs, and using tools".

Why it matters

It removes the layer most teams are quietly counting on. If the provider says its own monitoring is getting less reliable, the deployer's logs are the control that is left.
