This note is written in praise. Depth is a chosen shape, and a necessary one: someone has to go all the way down. The specialist is the one who does — who has gone deeper into a single thing than any model ever has, until the field stops being knowledge and turns to instinct.

Here is what the specialist alone can do. When the machine answers with total confidence and is quietly, catastrophically wrong, it is rarely the generalist who catches it. It is the one who feels the error before they can prove it — who senses, in the prickle of long-earned depth, that the answer is off. As The Generalist Manifesto insists, that is how the machines are kept in check.

So the specialist is not the generalist's enemy but their complement; the machine has taste for neither, and owns only the shapeless middle. Against it, the generalist who has been everywhere and the specialist who has gone all the way down stand on the same side.
